From Garda Lake to the Oceans of the world
Manuel Modena, sailor from Garda and former Luna Rossa tailer.
Born in 1975, Manuel gained his experience in the Italian Olympic team, 49er class, from 2001 to 2004. In 2003 he became Italian 49er class champion. In 2005 he became world champion of the Melges 24 class and the same year he won the Italian Match Race Championship.
After the first America's Cup in 2007 he participated again with Luna Rossa in the regatta seasons with the STP65 and the TP52, winning the Extreme Sailing Series circuit in 2011.
In 2015 he was at his third America's Cup with Luna Rossa
Also of great prestige was the opportunity to be part of the national sailing team
for three years in the 49er class, with my cousin Luca Modena.
Together we won an Italian title and, twice more, we finished second.
"In a nutshell, my role consists of adjusting the sails based on the pace of the boat, maintaining an optimal speed, always acting in harmony with the helmsman. Concentration and the ability, if you can excuse the expression, to feel the boat under your butt are fundamental."
After my adventure with the Italian national team ended, I received a call from the Luna Rossa team, the famous sailing boat created for the America's Cup competitions.
I was called up for April 21st 2004 for a trial period... Over ten years have passed since I was part of this prestigious crew.
With enormous satisfaction I found myself fulfilling another great dream, that of participating in the oldest and most famous trophy in the sport of sailing: the America's Cup, more than 160 years of history, of tradition of epic battles, sporting.
a dream
I am a boy from Castelletto and I have been passionate about sailing since I was a child; I dreamed of winning the prestigious Centomiglia, which until about fifteen years ago was a truly high-level regatta, even if it now struggles to replicate the same interest as then.
I made my first voyages on the port of Castelletto where my father had his activities, and being also an enthusiast, he introduced me to this sport which was then experienced as a pure hobby and amateurism.
As time passed, and despite various personal vicissitudes, I have never stopped with sailing since then.
The Centomiglia has always been in my dreams, also because my father had never managed to win it and, for us Garda sailors, it is almost a matter of honor to be able to climb to the top step of that podium. I succeeded five times, in the top category, in the overall, and for me it was very important. In fact, thanks to this competition, I had the opportunity to get noticed.
The value of the sport, and the sailing
Sport teaches a lot and as you mature you always understand it
the more importance. It is increasingly understood that sporting activity, at the highest levels, is not just physical performance but also knowing how to build positive human relationships with your collaborators, knowing how to question yourself every day, having a lot of patience and believing until deep in what you do.
You learn respect for opponents, colleagues and respect for the rules; because, it's true, you can take shortcuts in life but this certainly takes away the pleasure of knowing that no one can afford to doubt your result. These are the values that drive honest people to persevere in their goals.
It's a pure sport so you have to be open to others and make your talent available to a large group, share as much as possible and give everything for others and with others.
In these races years, thanks to this sport, I have sailed in many places: Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, Turkey, Muscat, Miami, Singapore, New Port, Boston, San Diego, San Francisco, Norway, France , Spain, England, and many others.
Garda lake, famous for sailing
There are wind conditions of various kinds, let's say 360 degrees. There are light to very strong winds even in 24 hours. The lake is mainly a "top level" gym for the Olympic classes, and it is no coincidence that it is frequented by super champions.
In addition there are also well organized and well structured clubs and clubs. Not to forget the many accommodation facilities of various kinds and of excellent quality and other facilities for many other sports. In short, the top of the top.
Lake Garda has given me a lot professionally, in particular the technique of sailing in strong winds, a skill that has served me well all over the world.
Plus I've always loved fast, planing boats and now I fly! But the feeling is almost the same. From this point of view, the lake has always shaped strong wind sailors.
